Dr. William J. Koenig is one of New York’s most experienced and trusted plastic surgeons. As a specialist breast and body plastic surgeon, he believes in taking a holistic approach to rejuvenation. In addition to recommending the best treatment plans for his patients, Dr. Koenig encourages them to maintain healthy lifestyles by being conscientious about their diets, exercising regularly, and balancing their lives. And he certainly practices what he preaches. Here’s a glimpse into his life beyond the operating room.

What’s a typical day for you?  I wake up every day at 6am. On the days I am in the OR, I will run to work instead of drive my car and walk home when I’m done operating.

Most days I fast about 12 hours, until noon. For lunch, I’ll usually have a salad without any meat or carbs. I eat very little meat (almost no red meat) and low carbs in general.

On Fridays I go biking, hiking or running with my wife.

My favorite weekends are those spent on Keuka Lake doing active things. I also enjoy cooking an involved meal and once a week we’ll go to a restaurant.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

That’s easy: I’ve always wanted to be a doctor. My father was a doctor, I liked science and helping people.

What are your favorite hobbies?

Running, biking and hiking, bow hunting.

What is your favorite thing about Rochester, NY?

There is an infinite number of things to do in Rochester.  People are wonderful – down to earth and real. There is no traffic and great access to many interesting places and the education system is stellar. I’ve been here for 15 years now.

What is your biggest pet peeve?

Wasting time.

Do you have a favorite book or movie?

My favorite movies are Citizen Kane, Hard Days Night and It’s a Wonderful Life. For books, Moby Dick, Don Quixote and 1984 are my all-times.

What is one thing you think that everyone should do at least once in their lives?

Assist on a surgical mission to help underprivileged people.

What are you most looking forward to in the next 10 years?

Watching my children grow, having their own family and becoming a grandparent. More time to travel and continuing to provide wonderful care to my patients.

What’s the best way to start the day?

Black coffee and a vigorous workout.

What is your favorite and least favorite food?

Least favorite: any type of cold egg. Favorite: sushi
