Common injectables include Botox®, Restylane®, Radiesse®, Juvederm™, Perlane® and Sculptra®. Many lines on the face are caused by muscle activity, such as furrowing or raising your brows. Botox acts by weakening those muscles to prevent the lines from being reinforced. Forehead and eye wrinkles respond most readily to Botox, and it is ideal for the glabellar area (lines between brows). The tiny needles cause minimal discomfort, do not require anesthesia, and no downtime is needed. While patient experiences vary, results typically appear in two to four days and last for three to six months. Botox is generally safe for all except those who are pregnant or have neurological disorders. Bruising is a common side effect while the chance of temporary muscle drooping is only one percent.
Restylane is a wrinkle filler made of non-animal-derived hyaluronic acid, which has minimal risk of animal disease transmission and allergic reaction. Its results are immediate and last about six months. Hyaluronic acid increasingly binds to the body's water, making it natural and thus requiring no pre-testing. However, avoiding aspirin, non-steroid anti-inflammatories, St. John's wort, and supplemental vitamin E is advisable to reduce bleeding and bruising from the injection. Minimizing exposure to sunlight and extreme cold is also recommended after injection. Restylane may aggravate symptoms in those susceptible to cold sores, keloid scars, and hypertrophic scars. Common side effects are redness and swelling around the injection which usually disappears within seven days.
Individual results may vary.
Ready to perfect that pout? Looking to enhance your lips and decrease lip lines around them?
Now offering Restylane® Silk, the first and only FDA-approved product designed for subtle lip enhancement and the lines around the mouth. As we age, lip thinning, a loss in lip shape, and an increase in vertical lines above the lip occur. Made of smaller, smoother particles in order to treat this delicate area, Restylane® Silk provides natural-looking results to maintain lip fullness for up to six months, although patient experiences vary. Made of a clear gel formulation of hyaluronic acid, Silk is formulated to behave like your body's own natural hyaluronic acid. Common side effects associated with the injection are swelling, redness, pain, bruising, or tenderness.
Radiesse is a filler gel containing Calcium Hydroxylapatite microspheres, and it is ideal for wrinkles around the eyes, nose, and mouth. It is approved by the FDA and produces safe, immediate results with no pre-testing necessary. Radiesse promotes the body's natural collagen production, each treatment usually lasting a year or longer. Those taking aspirin or other blood thinners are advised to consult a physician prior to the procedure, for such medications may worsen bleeding or bruising at the injection site. Mild bruising, redness, and swelling, however, are normal and common side effects. Avoiding makeup, sunlight, and excessive contact and movement of the injection site is advisable for 24 hours following injection. Also, no recovery time is necessary after a Radiesse treatment.
Also made of a hyaluronic acid-based filler gel is Juvederm. It is especially ideal for wrinkles around the eyes and mouth, and it is completely safe to use. It is FDA approved as biocompatible, for hyaluronic acid is already present in the human body as a source of skin's fullness and volume. In fact, it is the first hyaluronic acid filler approved by the FDA as safe for skin containing any amount of melanin, or color. To prevent redness, swelling, and itching at the injection site, it is recommended to avoid intense exercise, alcohol consumption, and excessive sunlight for 24 hours following injection.
Are you looking for a more youthful, fuller look in the cheek area?
Introducing Voluma(tm), the first and only FDA-approved filler to correct age-related volume loss in the mid-face. Voluma(tm) is made with a modified hyaluronic acid, derived from a naturally occurring complex sugar. As we age, the curves of our cheeks begin to lose volume, causing them to sag and appear sunken. Voluma™ works instantly to help restore your cheek contour with a subtle lift. With optimal treatment, natural-looking results last up to 2 years.1
Sculptra Aesthetic is FDA approved and is made of biocompatible and biodegradable poly-L-lactic acid. Results appear gradually since treatment involves three injection procedures over a few months, and they can last up to two years.2 The poly-L-lactic acid replenishes collagen that has worn away due to age, slowly producing long-term skin elasticity and smoothness. Temporary side effects at the injection site include bleeding, itching, bruising, tenderness, discomfort, redness, and mild to moderate bumps. Side effects generally disappear shortly without the need for treatment. Those with allergies to any Sculptra ingredient or with susceptibility to keloid or hypertrophic scars should avoid Sculptra. Areas of infected or inflamed skin should also avoid injection.
BELOTERO BALANCE® is a dermal filler made of hyaluronic acid designed to adapt to the individuality of your skin. By binding to the water found naturally in our skin, it plumps and fills in wrinkles and folds. Belotero® is strong enough to be used for deep lines and wrinkles around the nose and mouth such as nasolabial folds, and gentle enough for delicate lip lines. Belotero® integrates into your skin and molds to your distinct facial contours for a natural, immediate result.
Also available is a Radiesse and Juvederm package which utilizes two products working together to treat both deep lines and surface level wrinkles. At your first appointment, the doctor will inject Radiesse, which promotes the body's natural collagen production and is ideal for the deep lines around the nose and mouth. About 7-10 days later, Juvederm will be administered above the Radiesse to address the more superficial expression lines. Combining these two products can optimize the outcome as well as add to the longevity of the result.
As skin ages, its collagen loses strength, and facial muscles begin to cause lines. Injectable collagen derived from human sources requires no pre-testing, but bovine-derived collagen should include a skin sensitivity test four weeks prior to the procedure.

Botox® is different from injectable fillers because it is an injectable neuromodulator used to temporarily weaken the facial muscles. Botox® is used in areas where the muscles are hyperactive, causing fine lines and wrinkles, such as the forehead, crow's feet, and in between the eyes (glabella). Botox® helps to relax the muscles and diminish the appearance of expression lines and wrinkles. It does have a temporary effect that typically wears off after about 6 months.
There are many different types of fillers that are available. Depending on where you want to add volume, different wrinkle fillers can be used in different areas of the face and last for different lengths of time. At the Quatela Center for Plastic Surgery we offer Radiesse®, Restylane®, Juvederm™, Voluma™, Sculptra®, and Belotero®.
Injectable fillers, depending on the product used and the area injected, can last anywhere from several months to several years.
Most patients experience little to no downtime with Botox® and injectable fillers. There is always the small risk of swelling or bruising around the injection site, but this can be minimized by applying ice to the treated area in the office.
Most of our patients experience minimal discomfort due to the use of extremely tiny needles when placing fillers or Botox®. Numbing creams can be used on the skin or injections of numbing medications can be given to help prevent discomfort. Many injectable fillers even contain numbing medication within them, so that the area being treated becomes numb as the filler is applied.
