Rhinoplasty FAQ's

When will I have my final result after rhinoplasty surgery?

If you've had a nose job, it can take time for swelling to resolve after rhinoplasty surgery.  Right away you will have an idea of how your new nose will look, but most of the result will be visible after the first few weeks and months.  The final result is typically visible after six months to one year.

How long do I have to have packing in my nose?

Packing is not always placed after a rhinoplasty, but if it is, it will typically remain in place for one day after surgery. Small splints are also sometimes placed inside of the nose and left in place for seven days post-procedure.

Can I see what my post-surgical nose might look like?

Yes, Dr. Vito Quatela will use digital imaging during your rhinoplasty consultation to show you what your nose might look like after surgery. Your desired changes will be discussed and shown using photos taken at the consultation. Dr. Quatela specializes in rhinoplasty surgery for people from Rochester and the surrounding areas of Buffalo and Syracuse, NY.

What is the downtime after rhinoplasty surgery?

Patient experiences vary after rhinoplasty. Bruising and swelling typically last 7 to 10 days. A cast will stay on the outside of the nose for about 7 days. Residual bruising can be camouflaged with makeup, which can be taught to you by our experts at Q the Medical Spa at Lindsay House. Many patients return to work 1 to 2 weeks after surgery. Sports activities, heavy lifting, etc. are restricted for about 3 weeks.

How long will my nose appear swollen?

It can take some time for swelling to resolve after rhinoplasty surgery.  Most of the swelling usually goes away after the first few weeks and months, but a small amount of residual swelling can take 6 months to 1 year to resolve.

What is the difference between an open and closed rhinoplasty?

An open rhinoplasty involves an incision along the undersurface of the outer portion of the nose, which is called the columella.  This incision generally heals very well with minimal scarring.  A closed rhinoplasty is also an option for some patients. This utilizes several incisions made on the inside of the nose with no external incision.  These options will be discussed in detail at your individual consultation appointment with your surgeon.
