Dr. Ashley Amalfi has been named Board Vice President of Membership for the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the world’s largest plastic surgery specialty organization. She’ll begin the role in October, and the distinction comes with a notable first: she’s the youngest surgeon ever named to this position, and only the second woman to hold it in at least the past 20 years.
If you’re not familiar with ASPS or why this matters, that’s a fair question. Here’s what this role actually means, and more importantly, what it means for you as a patient.
What is the American Society of Plastic Surgeons?
ASPS represents board-certified plastic surgeons across the United States and Canada, and sets the standards that guide safe, ethical practice in the specialty. Membership isn’t something any surgeon can simply sign up for. It requires board certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, rigorous training requirements, and a strict code of ethics covering patient safety, honest advertising, and surgical practice standards.
In simple terms: when a surgeon is a member of ASPS, it’s one of the clearest signals available that they’ve met a nationally recognized bar for training, safety, and ethical practice. Being selected for a national leadership position within the organization goes a step further. It reflects a physician’s standing among peers and a demonstrated commitment to advancing the field.
This didn’t happen overnight
Dr. Amalfi’s leadership within ASPS isn’t new. She currently chairs the ASPS Young Plastic Surgeons Steering Committee, and previously served as Chair and Secretary of the ASPS Assembly of Member Sections. Her involvement goes back even further, including as Chair of the Women’s Plastic Surgery Steering Committee and Social Media Committee, and a member of the Publications Education Committee and the Quality Accreditation Program Investigation Task Force, among other roles.
In short, this is someone who has spent over a decade in the rooms where plastic surgery standards, education, and patient safety initiatives are actually built, not just someone with a title. She’s also currently the only physician in the Rochester area holding a national leadership role within ASPS.

Dr. Quatela, founder and double board-certified facial plastic surgeon, shared his own thoughts on the recognition.
