A talented artist and board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Kalnoki specializes in plastic surgery after weight loss or pregnancy and other body contouring procedures. As a woman, Dr. Kalnoki brings a unique perspective to the Quatela Center for Plastic Surgery.
Breast reduction surgery decreases the size and improves the shape of overly large breasts. It is similar to a breast lift, with additional removal of fat and breast tissue.
Breast reduction surgery can be a life-changing procedure for women living with overly large breasts. Women tend to experience an increase in self-esteem, improved self-image, more confidence, and a higher quality of life after breast reduction surgery. Increased physical activity is another benefit of getting breast reduction surgery. Even basic tasks like bending down to pick something up, exercising or shopping for a new dress can become far less challenging.
You may experience neck, shoulder, and back pain because your breasts are disproportionate to your body's frame. Overly large breasts can stretch and pull clothes, interfere with basic physical activities like running and jumping, and be embarrassing, resulting in low self-esteem.
Ideally, breast reduction patients must be willing and able to commit to the time needed for surgery, follow-up appointments, and complete healing from their procedure. You must be in good overall health and not be a smoker, in addition to having realistic expectations about the results of the surgery.
Dr. Kalnoki meets with you in a private consultation and discusses your reasons for seeking this procedure. The discussion includes questions about your previous medical history, current medical conditions or health concerns, your surgical history and experience, and current medications and supplements you are taking. Your answers help her determine if breast reduction surgery is the most effective procedure to achieve your desired results. She customizes the surgery to meet your needs.
Dr. Kalnoki performs breast reduction surgery under a general anesthetic, or uses a local anesthetic with sedation. The surgery usually lasts around 2 hours. Dr. Kalnoki begins by making 2 anchor-shaped incisions extending downward from the nipples and across the bottom creases of the breasts. She then removes excess breast tissue, fatty tissue, and inelastic skin to create rounder, firmer, and breasts. She molds the tissue into more natural-looking, even breasts. In many cases, Dr. Kalnoki repositions the nipples and areolae.
You should be able to return home within a few hours of your surgery to begin the healing process. Dr. Kalnoki prescribes pain medication that you can get before the surgery and she recommends measures to soothe the soreness of the breasts. Getting plenty of rest and wearing a surgical support bra as directed helps alleviate some of the swelling and bruising that are common side effects of breast reduction. It is typical for breast reduction patients to miss one to two weeks of work and avoid strenuous exercise for several weeks. Speak with Dr. Kalnoki about your own projected recovery time before returning to work and resuming exercise or other strenuous activities.
Some women experience symptoms severe enough to constitute a medical health problem. If this is true in your case, your primary care physician may refer you to a plastic surgeon specializing in breast reduction for a consultation. Most insurance plans cover breast reduction surgery if certain criteria are met.
Most breast reduction surgeries last two hours, but times may vary based on the amount of tissue that needs removal and your specific needs.
Dr. Kalnoki performs all breast surgeries on an outpatient basis at the Lindsay House Surgery Center, a fully licensed multi-specialty ambulatory surgery center located at the Quatela Center in Rochester, New York.
Dr. Kalnoki makes anchor-shaped incisions on the breasts for breast reduction surgery. The resulting scars will heal and fade with time. Breast tissue removed during a breast reduction will not return, but fluctuations in hormones and weight can sometimes cause the breasts to enlarge. Talk to Dr. Kalnoki about strategies for maintaining your overall health and breast size in the longterm.
