What is Smartlipo™?  This question comes up often when people reach out to the office. There are many different techniques when it comes to liposuction treatments, and Smartlipo is one of them. Some people are interested in it as a less invasive fat removal option; however, it is important to know that Smartlipo is still a surgical liposuction procedure.

How Is Smartlipo Different Than Traditional Liposuction?

The unique difference with Smartlipo is that it has laser-assisted technology that dissolves fat and may help with skin tightening. Smartlipo works best on the abdomen, inner thighs and arms, while common areas for traditional liposuction are the abdomen, inner and outer thighs, love handles, arms and back.

How Are Smartlipo and Liposuction the Same?

Liposuction, no matter the technique, is the removal of excess fat in unwanted areas. Liposuction is used for body contouring, and never for weight loss – it is best used when you are at a maintainable or ideal weight. The best candidates for liposuction treatments are those in good health, at a stable weight with a BMI of under 35, and who have areas of excess fat that do not respond to diet and exercise.

Downtime for all liposuction treatments is the same. You can expect swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the treated area(s). A compression garment is worn for 3 weeks following the surgery.

How Do I Know Which Liposuction Technique I’m a Candidate For?

Your board-certified plastic surgeon will decide on and recommend the best liposuction technique for you and for the specific area being treated. During your consultation appointment, the quality of your skin will be evaluated as it plays a big role in which procedure is the best option to fit your needs. If the skin is loose or sagging, a skin removal procedure may be recommended instead.
